Top Midfielders in the world - Abilities and Weakness

Here we present the top five midfielders in the world right now in our opinion. Their abilities to change the game are discussed here, so is their weakness as no footballer as of now can be called a perfect player in our opinion.

Players are not ranked in any particular order.

Luka Modric

Once named as one of the worst transfer for Real Madrid, Luka Modric proved everyone the opposite as he becomes one of the top midfielders of this generation. He won the UEFA Midfield player of the Year 2017. Even at the age of 32, he doesn't show any signs of slowing down. He was instrumental in Real Madrid's run in both the league and UCL double last year. He is one of those midfielders who equally contribute to offense and defense having a great number of interceptions in the league. He is well known for his skills and dribbling ability, great vision and through balls.

Abilities

He is well known for his dribbling ability, he can quickly change the tempo of the game. He also possesses a great shooting ability from distance. He is great in defending considering the fact that he is an attacking type player.

Weakness

Just like his midfield compatriot Toni Kroos, Modric lacks aerial prowess along with weak physicality added to the weakness.

Paul Pogba

Manchester United broke their previous transfer record to buy Paul Pogba for Juventus knowing that he can be one of the top midfielders of this generation. Having most of the qualities needed for a midfielder, Pogba is undoubtedly a rising star. He posses great physicality, could shoot from anywhere and has a great heading ability. What more can anyone ask for? Also, he is only 24 meaning a lot more contribution and a lot more space to improve. He is one of the main reason for Machester United's success in recent times.

Abilities

He does possess most qualities a footballer should have. He has a great shooting ability and header of an attacker, great vision and passing abilities of a midfielder and good defensive abilities and physicality as of a defender. He can be an asset to modern football if used correctly.

Weakness

His weakness includes lack of positioning and a weak decision-making skill as he tends to shoot more when a better option was to pass to a teammate. But this weakness apart from other players can be eliminated as he gets more experience so that gives him an advantage.

Thiago Alcantara

After his move from Barcelona to Bayern Munich, Bayern got a gem who filled the place vacated by Toni Kroos almost as good. He is a great playmaker who is capable of moving through the ground with his excellent dribbling ability. He has got great passing quality and good decision making capability. He got great support in front to complement his game in the likes of world class players such as Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller. He has got a lot of years ahead of him as he is only 26 years old and could achieve great success over the years.

Abilities

Thiago has a great vision he is able to find players in better positions and create chances. He got good dribbling ability and good shooting ability. His link-up play is good with other players contributing to the overall gameplay.

Weakness

As the case of most midfielders, Thiago also posses weak aerial ability. He is also less defensive minded and doesn't track back much. Physicality is also his weak spot.

Toni Kroos

Toni Kroos is the definition of elegance. He does things so neat and perfect. Ever since he has moved from his former side Bayern he has improved every bit as he helped real win two champions league and the first team in modern format to defend the UCL. He also has a world cup to his name. Only aged 27, the German pass master has a lot of time ahead of him to achieve more success.
He is easily one of the Top midfielders, if not the best midfielder right now, averaging more than 90% pass success rate in all competitions and his ability to take set pieces is second to none.

Abilities

He is known for his ability to find the target whenever he is on the ball. Kroos on the ball is very composed and is able to change the pace of the game anytime. He has an excellent vision and has a great ability to play one-touch football. He also has great long range shooting ability. He can also play any position in the midfield and can use both the feet equally well making is very versatile and complete.

Weakness

Although he is good at so many areas there is a bit of weakness too. He is weak at tracking back or marking. His aerial abilities are not so great. Physicality is another weak spot.

Marco Verratti

The Italian international is no doubt a great talent and it can be seen during the recent transfer window when a lot of clubs were surrounding him for his services. He was one of the reasons for PSG's domestic and European advancements in the recent times. And with the addition of Neymar and Mbappe, Verratti could be more dangerous than before. With his ability to go past players and can play killer passes he is one of the most promising young players of the time.

Abilities

He has great dribbling skills and close control, great pace to go past defenders and has killer vision. He can assist as well as have a great scoring ability. He is also a defensive-minded player capable of making well-timed tackles making him valuable on both ends of the pitch.

Weakness

Apart from his physicality and lack of aerial ability, Verratti has is a bit weak in decision-making as he keeps the ball bit too long which may cause opposition players to close down him early where he could have passed the ball. But as same as in case of Pogba, this is not much of an issue as it can be cleared as he gains more experience considering the fact that he is only 24.
